Work From Home Tax Allowance

Has your Employer asked you to work from home?

Claiming a tax rebate for working from home is one of the easiest ways to claim back a bit of extra cash from HMRC.

Lots of companies have asked employees to work from home, especially since the COVID pandemic. In fact, for lots of companies, its now become the norm. Even if you work a few days at home and a few days in the office, you can still claim.

HMRC allow you to claim a tax allowance for working from home. It’s designed to pay towards the cost of working from home. In other words, it’s to help with your increased costs, such as gas, electricity etc. It might not cover the whole increased costs, but something is better than nothing!

From 6th April 2020, HMRC increased the amount they will pay you for working from home to £6 a week. Some employers may automatically give you the allowance, so you wont need to claim, but if they haven’t, it’s worth claiming. After all, the money is better in your pocket!

The tax allowance will be applied to your tax account and can be backdated by up to 4 tax years so its definitely worth claiming.

Whether you work part time or full time, as long as you pay tax over the course of the tax year, you’re eligible to claim. Also remember, if you’re a couple and both work from home, you can both submit claims as tax is based on individual circumstances so you could both receive a payment.

Also, its not automatically applied each year. If a claim is submitted part way through a tax year (after 6th April), HMRC will apply the allowance for that year, but that’s as far as they’ll go. For the following tax year, you’ll need to claim again, but just ask us to submit an additional claim and we’ll do the rest for you.
